James Marquez
James “Jimmy” Marquez, 75, of Hawi, died April 30, 2018, at the Kohala Hospital. Born in North Kohala, he was a retired welder and enjoyed associating with the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Kohala Congregation.
Friends may call 10 a.m. to noon May 18 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Hawi for a noon memorial service. Casual attire.
He is survived by his wife, Maile Lincoln Marquez of Kohala; daughters, Cathy N. (Ernest) Marquez-Batacan of Honokaa and Patty K. Marquez-Carvalho of Kohala; sons, James K. (Teresa) Marquez of Kohala and Jonathan K. L. (Rona) Marquez of Honokaa; brothers, Filomeno (Julie) Marquez, Jr. of Oahu, Wilfred Marquez of Kamuela and Michael (Emma) Marquez of Kamuela; sisters, Eleanor Marquez of Kaneohe, Linda (Charles) Schmidt of Corvalis, Ore., and Angie Alcoran of Kohala; one sister-in-law; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Samuel Y.H. “Pastor Sam” Shim, 73, of Keaau, died April 29 at the Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Care Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired pastor with New Hope at the Crossroads, an associate pastor and head counselor at New Hope Church Hilo, author, song writer/music composer, and also served in the Hawaii Army National Guard 100th Battalion 442nd Infantry
Friends may call 10-11 a.m. on May 19 at the New Hope Church for an 11 a.m. funeral service. Friends may also call May 21 at the Homelani Memorial Park for a 10 a.m. graveside committal service. Casual attire, no flowers.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Shim of Keaau; son, Slade S. (Noriko) Shim of Hilo; daughter, Stacy S. (Wil) Tsui of Honolulu; stepdaughters, Shirlene Heffner of Oahu, Kathy (Dirk) Apao of Kauai and Janel Smith of Hilo; brothers, Herbert Y.I. John Milare, Sr.
John David “Ninka” Milare, Sr., 66, of Mountain View, died April 6, 2018, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo and was raised in Olaa, he was a retired adult corrections officer with the Kulani Correctional Facility and a U.S. Army Veteran.
Friends may call 6-9 p.m. on May 19 at the Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6:45 p.m. rendering of military honors followed by a 7 p.m. memorial service. Casual attire, no flowers.
He is survived by his former wife, Lurline Santos Milare of Pahoa; son, John Milare, Jr. of Pahoa; daughters, Leonell (Derwin) Kahele of Pahoa, Johnnell (Matthew Polido) Milare of Pahoa and Jontel (Taylor Stevens) Milare of Pahoa; brother, Allen “Bozo” Milare of Hilo; sister, Miriam “Mimi” (Jerry) Fernandez of Hilo; 12 grandchildren, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
